The GURPS New Sun (1999) sourcebook is a great help in this! It breaks it all down, makes the whole world understandable, fills me in on mysteries I couldn’t quite parse. I’ve a bit of trouble wrapping my head around it all, honestly. There is magic AND technology, mutants, monsters, a complex portrayal of a society that only dimly mirrors my own.

That is a weird and thoroughly engrossing far future fantasy series if I’ve ever seen one. OK, so I HAVE read some of Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun series. Rather than Blade Runner, it feels a bit like computer stuff filtered through late 80s Marvel comics - bright, bold, not really tethered to anything in reality. That’s not so much that they got it wrong, more that cyberpunk, like so many other things at the time, hadn’t crystallized yet in pop culture’s mind’s eye - it is a little less gritty, a little more sleek, a bit more in line with traditional sci fi visions.
